A Softer Touch....
Benny Jay has just released his third single, Alexandria, along with a captivating music video. Set against the picturesque backdrop of San Francisco, Alexandria tells the story of a fleeting romance - one that eventually fades into nothing more than a distant memory. With its softer, more reflective tone, this song stands out on the album as an intimate exploration of love’s impermanence and the emotions that linger long after it’s gone.

The accompanying music video brings this sentiment to life, following the brief yet impactful connection between two characters, played by Benny Jay and Annemarie Verkulyen. Through moody visuals and heartfelt storytelling, Alexandria encapsulates the bittersweet nostalgia of a love that was never meant to last. The single and video are available now - be sure to watch and experience the story for yourself.

THE DAY HAD FINALLY ARRIVED - GRAND OPENNING
When the paint brushes were cleaned, the floors were done and the last nail hammered, the finishing touches were completed by May of 2013 and all the music equipment was rolled in and hooked up.
Rock Along Records studios officially opened its doors with an invitation only to the grand opening on 1st June 2013.

HOLY GROUND
The floor of the main entrance and kitchen area of the Rock Along Records studios were laid with slate tiles and the walls nailed with timber logs to give it that country cabin feel.
“Every time I walk into my studio I feel peace and a sense of calm. It’s quiet and it makes me feel good to see the fruits of my labour. It’s my playground, my temple, the place I go to escape the world” – Benny Jay.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Each room had been installed with their own heating and cooling units so that noise again was isolated and couldn’t travel through to the next room. Absorption beads were put in place between the window panes for moisture. Painting was one of the last things done. There were many tins of varnish used and countless hours and coats done but it was near the completion of the studio at this point.

THE PATH THAT LEADS TO THE STUDIO
The outer space leading into the studio building needed to look and feel right too, so the garden was filled with palms, to give Benny Jay some inspiration and that Californian vibe. Furry friends helped along the way for moral support.

ACOUSTICALLY SOUND
It was time to add cosmetic features whilst ensuring the walls and ceilings were being acoustically treated so that each room had a desired sonic quality to it. The large live drum room was the least dampened to allow it to have a big ‘reverby’ sound. The control room had the most treatment to it mainly with heavy bass traps in the corners. Rubber, carpet, pillows and blankets were packed in to create these.

TIMBERRRR!!!!!
Cosmetically, Benny Jay wanted a cosy cabin like feel, so walls were lined with timber pine logs, lining boards and stone throughout. He also laid down the laminate flooring in each room with an acoustic quality underlay. With this completed, the rooms really came alive and the smell of the newly installed timber made it the perfect moment to stop and reflect on the last two years of hard work.

BUZZ ME THAT WIRE
A lot more time was needed when the electrical wiring was run through, ensuring that certain cable wires were not crossed or looped. This ensured minimal or total isolation between rooms and unwanted noise was managed with a separate feed from the main front pit and properly earthed.

TAKING SHAPE
Double walls and ceilings were boarded up. The insulation was in. The kitchen was installed. The bathroom done. Windows and doors were put in place. Every gap was air tight sealed. Things were well underway and taking shape.

THE ROOMS - Blood, Sweat and Tears...
Once the outer shell had been finalised it was time to build the inner walls and ceilings of each room in the studio. Built according to the specifications of the plans it came together easily. Once again the walls and ceilings required insulation and bracing everywhere. These walls and ceilings became the sound proof barrier needed for a well built recording studio.
It was blood sweat and tears, quite literally. Structural beams were required to hold certain parts of the ceiling and walls of the control room and this came at the cost of bones breaking after of one of Benny Jay’s closest friends had fallen off the ladder lifting it into place. There were many bumps and bruises and stories to tell. Memorable ones.

IF ONLY THESE WALLS COULD TALK
Hands on deck, Benny Jay helped cut and build the outer timber frame and with the help of family and friends the studio soon began to take shape with a colorbond shell, wall and ceiling insulation as well as 18mm boards to brace every section. It sure was hard work, but it was soon to pay off.

THE RECORD LABEL
As an entrepreneur Benny Jay had envisioned the studio to be home to other artist’s and have it run as a commercially viable facility. Whilst it did not quite work out the way he had anticipated he still proceeded to start his own record label to facilitate his own works.
The label is merely a way to promote both the studio and Benny Jay as an artist to get his foot in the door of the music business.
As the label name suggests, so it is the passion for his love for rock and roll music!
Rock Along Records was born.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE STUDIO
“The idea was to create a space to write and record and call my own” – Benny Jay.

Using the golden ratio specifications, each room was designed to sound a particular way, giving most attention to the main control room, in which the SSL console would find the spot to call home.

Once plans were drawn for the 180sqm building it required a permit approval from the council before construction could commence.

Benny Jay was enthusiastic enough to follow it all the way through until its completion. It took almost 3 years to build, mainly due to funds as well as the weather and the sheer man power it needed to get it done!

Laying out the plumbing pipes, excavating for the concrete slab, pouring of the concrete, it was the foundation and the start of something big!

THE CONSOLE - How it all began...
In May of 2010 the shipping container arrived landing at the doorstep of his Australian home located in the outer west suburbs of Melbourne. It was the Solid State Logic mixing console he had purchased from an engineer in Miami Florida.
An SSL console with 48 Channels, the exact same mixing board you still see being used in the world's best studios such as Capital Records and The Warehouse. The same type of console used to record and mix Metallica's Black album with producer Bob Rock.
It remained in the garage until the completion of his home studio.
Whilst in need of some tender love and care Benny Jay has since teamed up with a local SSL tech who's upgraded and tweaked the big machine to function and sonically sound the way it should.
"It's a pleasure to work behind one of these and hear your music come alive! There's nothing quite like it!" - Benny Jay
